FBX files losing animation

Post by schmosef » Sat May 16, 2015 10:45 pm

I'm doing game development with Unity and I'm currently evaluating various LOD tools.

I really like all the options and the quality of results with Polygon Cruncher.

I'm building LODs for models I have purchased, generally in FBX format.

When I save a LOD, and import it to Unity, the animations are lost.

Am I doing something wrong?

Hello,

After you performed the optimization and save back FBX, you should use the Update mode which is top the export option panel.

When Update mode is unchecked, Polygon Cruncher exports your file as an entirely new file. As Polygon Cruncher does not handle animation, it is loose.
When Update mode is is checked, Polygon Cruncher only replaces the geometry in the original FBX scene by the optimized geometry.
This means that all other data is kept (animation, bones, specific materials...).

Of course the optimized file is saved with another file name (meaning that the original file is kept intact).

I could give further details about that if you want,

Thanks,
Manuel

Hi,

First, I want to thank you for this fantastic version of Polygon Cruncher (V11).

I have try this with magic option and result seems to be fantastic.

I have 2 small problems :
- first : I don't find "Update Mode" to keep animations for my fbx model (can you help me ?)
- second : pour la fenêtre "Optimisation", il manque un ascenseur sur le côté car par défaut on ne voit pas les infos du bas (nbre de faces, bouton "abandon" et pourcentage optimisé)

Merci.

Hi Motus!
First, I want to thank you for this fantastic version of Polygon Cruncher (V11).
Tks. There is big work behind this new version. I am very pleased that you find it useful.
I have 2 small problems :
- first : I don't find "Update Mode" to keep animations for my fbx model (can you help me ?)
To get access to the update mode (which keeps animation):
  • * Open a fbx file
    * Do you optimization stuff
    * Export your File > Save As or Apply button and select FBX format => at the top of the dialog you have to check the option which is displayed in bold (update mode)

Hi,

Thank you for your answer. I'm stupid, I have forgotten to click on "Apply" button that's why "update" doesn't appear...

I have now the "update" button, export seems to be ok but have problem with the new fbx file.
If I open it in Polygoncruncher, I can see my simplified model but in 3DS MAX 2015, there is no visible model.

Resume of my tests :

Original file when I import in Max :
File Name: 5P73Fixe.fbx
File Directory: D:\4_Downloads\SA-3 Exports
File Version: 6.1.0
File Creator: FBX SDK/FBX Plugins build 20070228
File Custom Writer: No
File Creation Time: 2016/6/29 22:6:41
File Axis Direction: Y-up
File Units: Centimeters
System Axis Direction: Z-up
System Units: Inches
System frame rate: 30,0
File frame rate: 30,0
File content: 18 Elements, 3 Materials, 2 Textures
=> all is OK in MAX

Modified model (21005 faces to 7609 faces) with Magic Option and with "update" checked:
File Name: 5P73Fixe_Lolo.fbx
File Directory: D:\4_Downloads\SA-3 Exports
File Version: 7.5.0
File Custom Writer: No
File Axis Direction: Y-up
File Units: Centimeters
System Axis Direction: Z-up
System Units: Inches
System frame rate: 30,0
File frame rate: 30,0
File content:
=> Result : no model present in MAX

Modified model (21005 faces to 7609 faces) with Magic Option and with "update" UNchecked:
File Name: 5P73Fixe2.fbx
File Directory: D:\4_Downloads\SA-3 Exports
File Version: 7.4.0
File Creator: FBX SDK/FBX Plugins version 2016.1.2
File Custom Writer: No
File Creation Time: 2016/7/7 16:11:54
File Axis Direction: Z-up
File Units: Centimeters
System Axis Direction: Z-up
System Units: Inches
System frame rate: 30,0
File frame rate: 30,0
File content: 4 Materials, 3 Textures, 10 Elements
=> Result : model ok in MAX but lost animation and textures

If you need, I can send you my model to reproduce problem.

Thank you for your help.

Merci !
