A brief guide to configure Maya format support

Since release 9.1, 3DBrowser is now including Maya file format support.

These file formats are supported by dynamic exchange. This means that Maya software must be setup on your computer.
The format support includes support of UV textures.
Using the Maya dynamic exchange is easy. Below is a brief explanation on the way to use it.

Setup Maya format support:
  • To support Maya dynamic exchange, do not forget to select Maya File Support from the 3DBrowser setup. If you already setup 3DBrowser and forget to select Maya support, just run the setup application again.
  • You must select the appropriate version of the file format, depending on your Maya version. If you have Maya 2014, select Support Maya 2014 files in the setup application.
  • Then setup will ask you a Maya folder. Select the appropriate Maya folder (ie. C:\Program files\Autodesk\Maya2014\).
  • Once completed the setup has put the Maya2Mootools_2014_x64.exe in your Maya/bin folder.
Note that if you use Maya 64 bits, you must run 3DBrowser setup and select the x64 bits version of the application
Browse Maya file:

Just run 3DBrowser and browse your Maya folders. 3DBrowser should display your files automatically.
If your Maya path has been lost, it may ask you for the Maya folder location.

Convert a file to Maya format:

Maya format (ma or mb) is now available in the format drop down menu when you select the Convert Files command or when you use the File > Save As... command from the 3D Viewer.
Just select the maya format and enter a filename for your maya file.

Optimize a Maya file:
  • Select the Maya file to optimize.
  • Select Tools > 3D > Polygon Cruncher
  • Optimize with Polygon Cruncher
  • Click on Save As...
  • Select Maya file format and enter a filename.
Modify Maya Path:

You may need to modify the Maya path. This can be done using the Tools > Preferences dialog from the 3D Viewer.

Enter the correct Maya Path in the appropriate field, under General preferences Tab. Note that the path must be the Maya folder (the folder where Maya2Mootools.exe is stored).

Troubleshootings:

If the dynamic exchange does not work:
  • Verify that you select the correct Maya file format version from the 3DBrowser setup.
If you run Maya 2012 (32 bits) , you must use Maya 2012 file support running 3DBrowser setup using the 32 bit mode
If you run Maya 2015 (64 bits), you must use Maya 2015 file support running 3DBrowser setup using the 64 bits option...
  • Verify that Maya2Mootools_XXXX[_x64].exe is stored in your Maya/bin folder.
  • Verify that your Maya path is correctly defined from the 3D viewer preferences.

Hi!

Please first select Maya 2014 when settings up 3DBrowser and check carefully that - when asked - you enter the correct path for Maya 2014.
The folder entered in the setup must point to the Maya folder.
For example: C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Maya2014

Then run 3DBrowser and check the path you have in the 3D Viewer. To do this:
- Browse a folder with some Maya files.
- If nothing appears, 3DBrowser should ask you to point out the Maya2Mootools.exe with a file selector. You should select Maya2Mootools_2014_x64.exe which is in C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Maya2014\Bin
- Note that you can also modify that path later by opening a 3D viewer then open Tools > Preferences dialog from the 3D Viewer.

Let me know if you succeed,
Manuel

I just rewrite the tutorial and update with the latest changes.
This should be better as it was a little outdated!

So you are also using 3ds Max plugin too?
If you experience some problem with the max plugin, please send any error report or some file on which you have problem to our support.
Be sure that it will be used only for debugging purpose only.

Any contribution of our users is appreciated and always lead to improvements!

BTW, are you using the latest release (3DBrowser 12.5) which has been release last week?

Manuel

I'm using Maya 2016 and i have the correct plugin associated.
C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Maya2016\bin\Maya2Mootools.ply.11_2016_x64.exe

However, i am completely unable to open any maya files in the 3D Browser. The error I get is the following:
mootools maya error.jpg
mootools maya error.jpg (11.65 KiB) Viewed 89906 times
Also, more than once, the instructions describe finding a Tools>Preferences option in 3D Viewer. The option is in Edit>Preferences.
Can someone please update this guide?

Install Maya: To work with Maya format, you need to have Autodesk Maya software installed on your computer. If you haven't already installed it, go to the Autodesk website and download the latest version.

Choose the appropriate plugin: Maya supports several different file formats, so you'll need to choose the appropriate plugin depending on the file format you want to work with. For example, if you want to import a Maya ASCII (.ma) file, you'll need to use the "MayaAscii" plugin.

Configure the plugin: Once you've identified the appropriate plugin, you'll need to configure it to work with your software. To do this, go to the plugin manager in Maya (Windows > Settings/Preferences > Plug-in Manager), select the appropriate plugin, and load it.
[/url]
Import or export files: With the plugin configured, you can now import or export files in the Maya format. To import a file, go to File > Import and select the appropriate file format. To export a file, go to File > Export and choose the appropriate file format.

Check the imported/exported files: After importing or exporting the file, it's important to check it to ensure that everything has been imported or exported correctly. Open the file and verify that all the elements have been imported or exported correctly.

I think : Choose Maya File Support in 3DBrowser setup.
Select correct Maya version.
Specify Maya folder.
Ensure Maya2Mootools_XXXX[_x64].exe in Maya/bin.
Verify accurate Maya path in 3D Viewer preferences.
